How To Change Engine Oil BMW 3 Series E90
BMW 3 Series E90 Oil Change: BMW E90 / E91 / E93 require use of full synthetic oil. Capacity is 6.4 liters and since there is no dipstick anymore you will need to use info from onboard computer to confirm oil level after an oil change.
This is a 2010 BMW 328xi Sedan but pretty much all E90 family has the same procedure for oil change. BMW usually recommended intervals of 15,000Km or more, that is too long and unrealistic. Read more here ( Oil Change Intervals.) on what damages long oil change intervals will cause to your used car engine.
Tools: Ratchet & 17mm socket, Oil filter tool, Flat screwdriver.
BMW 3 Series Engine Oil Change: Oil Filter Removal
There are several types of removal tools used to remove oil cap. Image below shows a flexible universal one. Auto part stores usually have oil cap removal tools in stock.
Lift your used car and support it on jack stands. Do not work on a car supported only by a standard vehicle jack. Have parking brake engaged.
Open engine oil filler cap and leave it open. Use oil cap tool and unscrew oil filter housing cap. Careful as oil filter cap might be quite tight sometimes and can break on removal.
Oil drain plug is located behind a plastic cover on engine splash shield. Use screwdriver to turn the lock and open cover. (Image below).
How To Drain Engine Oil BMW 3 Series
Use 17mm socket to remove drain plug and drain oil.
Oil will pour out as soon as you remove drain plug, be careful as might get quite messy. Give it some time to drain completely.
Replace oil plug washer with a new one, o-rings and gasket are included with oil filter (image below).
After oil is completely drained, install oil drain plug and close plastic cover.
Remove old filter and install new one. Replace both rubber O-rings with new ones (picture below/red arrows).
BMW 3 Series E90 Oil Change: Make sure both O-ring gaskets are positioned properly, screw oil cover into oil filter housing. Pour 6.5 liters of oil and close oil cap. Use on board computer to verify oil level.
