How to fix Code P0496 Chevrolet Cruze: 2015 Chevy Cruze Turbo engine. Check engine light is illuminated but car drives normally and has stable idle. Purge valve is a common problem on this engine but at least purge valve is cheap and requires very little labor. It can be done by anyone with minimal mechanical knowledge.

Most common cause for code P0496 is Vapor Canister Purge Valve.

Valve is located on top of the engine close to firewall therefore is easily accessible and replaceable. Will take about 20 minutes to remove it and install a new valve.

How to fix Code P0496 Chevrolet Cruze: Purge valve cost about $40 or so depending on where you buy it. Purge valve can be found at most auto parts store in Ontario or you can purchase it online, online is even cheaper.

Purge Valve Removal

Purge Valve has two vacuum hose connections and one electrical plug. Unclip electrical plug first then use a screwdriver to remove red tab on left vacuum line. Careful with red clip don’t let it fall or you will be looking for it inside engine bay for a while.

Next, remove vacuum hose on the other side of purge valve. Below is an image of vacuum line lock, located on the right of evaporation purge valve. Red arrows show where to press for removal.

How to fix Code P0496 Chevrolet Cruze: To remove it, press on both sides simultaneously and pull straight up. Evaporation Purge Valve is held in place by a rubber mount, there are no bolts just a hook type holder. After both vacuum lines are released, pull on the valve to free out of its rubber socket.

Installation of purge valve is just the reversal of removal, nothing special. Plug vacuum lines first then slide valve in and plug electrical connection. Erase engine codes and check engine light should now disappear permanently.
