Automatic Transmission Fluid should be changed even when manufacturers are vaguely claiming “Lifetime Fluid”. Nothing is lifetime, transmission fluid included. More on “lifetime” transmission fluid.

This is a 4 cylinder 2010 Honda Accord sedan with automatic transmission. Transmission fluid (DW-1) can be purchased at your local Honda dealer, takes about 3 liters for a simple drain and refill.

This procedure is called drain and refill which removes only half the fluid and should be performed twice spaced a week apart. Change transmission fluid, drive your car for a week and then drain and refill again.

Drain and refill is much safer for vehicles with high mileage than transmission flush, details on Transmission Flush vs Transmission Fluid Change.

Lift your used car and support it on jack stands. Do not work on vehicle supported only by own vehicle jack. Have parking brake engaged.

Transmission will be filled using dipstick tube located on top of Honda automatic transmission, right behind positive terminal of battery (Image below). (Note: this only a drain and refill, not a complete transmission fluid flush).

Remove transmission dipstick as a first step, this will allow air inside transmission making it easier to drain.

How to Drain and Refill Transmission Fluid

Remove drain plug and drain transmission fluid. Drain fluid completely. Careful, as fluid will come out as soon as you loosen the plug. One way is to leave drain plug in place until most fluid is drained and then remove it completely. Clean transmission drain plug from metal shavings.

Refill transmission using dipstick plug. Use a long thin funnel and slowly pour 3 quarts of fluid. Make sure fluid it is not leaking while pouring it.

How To Check Fluid Level

Start the car and move gear shift thru all gears. Check fluid level using dipstick with engine running while in park. Perform drain and refill twice in order to replace all transmission fluid by dilution.

Drive the car for a day or so and then do another drain/refill to take most of old fluid out (by dilution). In cases where a used car has been neglected and transmission fluid has never been changed, it should be performed three times in close succession (one week apart).
