Honda Air Conditioning: Low Pressure Switch Problem
Honda Air Conditioning problem: Honda Air Conditioning Not Working, Pressure Switch Replacement:
There are a lot of reasons why Air Conditioning system will not provide cold air on a used car. Problem in this case is related to air conditioning low pressure switch.
This is a 2011 Honda Civic but this problem with identical symptoms will happen on other models too (Honda Accord, Honda CR-V…etc). Honda A/C system is very similar if not completely the same throughout models.
A/C system is under pressure, if one of air conditioning lines breaks you will get refrigerant spraying all over the place. Wear gloves and safety glasses when replacing low pressure sensor.
This procedure assumes your AC system is empty and/or you already evacuated (emptied) air conditioning system before you start working on it.
Honda Intermittent Air Conditioning Operation
Symptoms
Air conditioning works fine when engine is cold, in the morning or when car has been sitting for few hours. However, after driving for about 15 to 20 minutes when engine reaches operating temperature, air conditioning stops working completely.
Upon checking the system was found refrigerant pressure is normal, compressor works and compressor clutch engages normally. All fuses and relays are good.
Failure was narrowed down to a failed Honda A/C low pressure switch is causing intermittent air conditioning operation. Air conditioning started to work normally after new sensor was installed.
Honda Air Conditioning Pressure Switch Removal
Its not a difficult job as there is enough space and sensor is accessible. Honda Air Conditioning low pressure switch is located under the hood on passenger side, right beside Abs pump or behind passenger side headlight.
Tools: 24mm deep socket, ratchet and and extension.
Engine off. Unclip electrical plug from sensor. Use 24mm socket to loosen switch and unscrew it.
Air conditioning lines at the base of pressure switch housing are thin and fragile. Be careful how much force you apply or lines might break which will cost quite a bit to fix.
Hold A/C line in place when unscrewing sensor. Use a screwdriver or something similar between air conditioning line and car chassis to hold A/C line while you try to loosen it. This job might require some help and extra pair of hands.
Air Conditioning Low Pressure Switch Installation
Once old sensor is removed, install new sensor and tighten it. Again watch how much force you use, don’t overkill it. Plug pressure sensor electrical connector and you are done.
