How to Change BMW Cabin Air Filter
Cabin air filter stops pollution from coming inside your cabin and ultimately your lungs. Cabin air filters are made of paper and are considered part of routine maintenance. Filters are designed to stop dust and allergens from getting inside your car.
Types of BMW Cabin Air Filter (E90)
There are 2 types of cabin filters: one is made of plain paper and another made with charcoal activated paper. You can tell differences easily, Charcoal is black color while plain paper is white. Picture below shows both cabin air filters, charcoal and plain paper.
Charcoal activated is more expensive, about 50% more but does a better job at trapping pollution. Price wise, will be about $60 for charcoal BMW cabin air filter and $40 for plain paper, depending on where you buy it.
Of course, as soon as you step out of the car you will breathe undiluted pollution again and make up for what cabin filter saved you…but let’s talk about inside the car for now.
Cabin air filter replacement should be considered part of routine maintenance. It really does help (especially charcoal one) with dust and other “stuff” coming into your cabin. Depending on where you live and what kind of environment your vehicle operates, cabin air filter should be changed every 2 years.
How To Remove BMW Air Filter
BMW did not screw up designing cabin air filter housing and location on E90. They kept it similar to previous model E46, only added few screws. Newer model F30 is a different story, complete redesign which involves several types of screws and some stretching under passenger side foot-well.
Tools: 8mm socket/ratchet or wrench and a flat screwdriver. Image below shows location of filter housing screws, six in total.
BMW cabin air filter is located under the hood at windshield base. Remove screws and lift cabin filter housing, it comes right out. Cabin filter has 3 clips (blue arrows), release clips and separate housing from cabin air filter.
How to install BMW Cabin Air Filter: Install new cabin filter in housing, filter goes in only one way. Install housing and tighten screws.
