How To Change Spark Plugs Acura ILX: 2015 Acura ILX, 2.0 liter engine. Spark plugs type are Iridium NGK ILZKR7B-11GS.
Spark plugs should be considered a maintenance item and replaced every 70,000 to 100.000km, depending on type of spark plugs. More details on Spark Plug Change Intervals.
Tools: Spark plug socket 5/8 or 16mm (or spark plug tool), extension and ratchet, 10mm socket/ratchet, flat screwdriver. Grease or anti-seize compound.
Spark Plug Removal ILX
Spark plugs on Acura ILX 2.0L are located behind a plastic cover on top of engine (image above). Remove engine cover, it has 2 flat headed plastic holders. Use flat screwdriver to rotate plastic screws and remove engine cover. Ignition coils can now be removed.
Unplug electrical ignition coil electrical connectors. Press on center locking tab and pull plug out. Sometimes coil electrical plugs get seized, use screwdriver as a lever while pressing on center tab. Be careful, coil electrical connectors are fragile.
Remove ignition coils 10mm bolts and pull all ignition coils out of engine cylinder head.
Use 16mm socket and ratchet to remove spark plugs.
Check inside spark plug holes for oil. If you see oil then engine valve cover and spark plugs o-rings gaskets need to be changed.
Spark Plug Installation Acura ILX
Use grease or anti-seize compound on spark plug threads. You should install new spark plugs by hand only. Do not use a ratchet or lever. Use only socket and extension to thread new spark plugs in engine block.
Spark plugs should go in easy by hand. Screw spark plugs by hand (as much as you can) and after use ratchet to tighten.
Do not over tighten, just hand tight or when you feel spark plug washer ring crushed. Usually is half a turn or so with a ratchet after spark plug has reached bottom by hand.
Install ignitions coils and tighten 10mm bolts. Plug ignition coil electrical connectors and install engine cover.
