How To Change Spark Plugs Jeep Patriot: 2015 Jeep Patriot, 2.4 Liter 4 Cylinder engine. Spark Plugs OEM are NGK model number ZFR5K 11, there are other brands you can chose from, Motorcraft, Denso, Champion. New Spark plugs used here will be Platinum Denso 4503 PK16TT, price is about $18 per plug.
Spark plugs are part of routine maintenance and need to be replaced at manufacturer recommended intervals and depending on spark plug type, earlier than recommendation is always better. Details on Spark Plugs Change Intervals. Spark Plugs will fail if you leave them too long and interfere with ignition coil operation, shortening ignition coil lifespan.
Tools: T30 torx bit, ratchet, extension, 16 spark plug socket and flat screwdriver. Grease or anti seize.
How to Remove Spark Plugs Jeep Patriot
Remove engine cover by pulling it upwards, its held in place with rubber bushings on four corners, there are no screws or bolts.
Unplug ignition coil electrical connectors, image above. Press on center connector safety tab and unplug it. Remove all four ignition coil T30 screws and lift ignition coils out of engine head opening.
Use spark plug 16mm socket and ratchet to remove all four spark plugs. Spark plug replacement should be done with a cold engine, as its easier to remove spark plugs when engine is cold, apart from saving burning your hands. Engine head is aluminum, heat will expand aluminum more than spark plugs nickel alloy body and spark plugs will be tighter when engine is hot.
Inspect engine spark plug holes for oil, if you notice oil then engine valve cover and spark plug o-rings gasket will have to be replaced too. Oil will gradually break down spark plug rubber boots and cause misfire.
New Spark Plug Installation Patriot
Initial installation of new spark plugs should be done By Hand Only, Do Not Use a Ratchet. If spark plugs are not threaded strait, engine head threads can be destroyed, expensive repairs will follow soon after. Apply grease on new spark plugs threads.
Insert a new spark plug on spark plug socket and using extension only thread new spark plug in engine head as much as you can by hand. Repeat same procedure on other spark plugs.
After all spark plugs are installed by hand, use ratchet to tighten. Do no over-tighten, it usually takes less than a full turn to crush spark plug washer and fully tighten spark plugs.
Install ignition coil by pressing them in engine head spark plug openings and tighten ignition coil T30 screws. Plug ignition coil electrical connectors, you will hear them click when in place.
Start engine and leave it run for a minute or so, to make sure all is working properly. Install engine cover and you are done.
