Nissan Altima Camshaft Positioning Sensor Code P0340
How to change Nissan Altima Camshaft Positioning Sensor: Trouble Code P0340. Check Engine light is on, trouble code shows a bad Camshaft Sensor with code P0340, SMP/Sensor Bank One.
Car runs normally and has no other symptoms except having check engine light on. Trouble code P0340 and a bad camshaft positioning sensor is common issues on Nissan cars, sensor was redesigned on latter models.
This is 4 cylinder engine, and there is only one Bank. ( On V6 six cylinders models there are 2 banks, Bank 1 and Bank 2. Each bank has a camshaft sensor). Camshaft Sensor on this 4 cylinder engine is located on divers side of engine block.

Nissan Altima Camshaft Positioning Sensor P0340 Removal
Camshaft sensor is easy to remove and install, 30 minutes at most. Remove engine cover. Engine cover has four Allen key bolts, picture above (blue arrows). Camshaft sensor is now visible (red circle, picture below).
Unplug Camshaft Sensor and Coolant sensor electrical connections, move wiring aside. Sensor is held in place by a 10mm bolt.
Remove 10mm bolt and pull sensor out. Should come out easily, if not then use a flat screwdriver to carefully wedge it out.
Picture below shows old camshaft sensor removed. Clean up sensor mounting hole before installing new sensor.
Nissan Camshaft Positioning Sensor is not expensive and costs about $75, depending where you buy it. It is available from most auto-parts stores or you can buy it online, (Rockauto for example).
Camshaft Positioning Sensor Installation
Install new Camshaft Sensor by firmly pushing sensor into engine mounting hole. Align sensor bolt hole with engine hole and install 10mm bolt. Do not over tighten sensor bolt.
Plug in coolant sensor and camshaft sensor electrical connections, install engine cover. Clean trouble codes and drive the car to check if problem is fixed.
