How to Renew Your Driver License in Ontario: Everyone holding a driver license in Ontario need to renew their driver license every 5 years, that makes for 8 million licensed drivers in the province. 300 thousand new drivers are added up and 4 million driver licenses are renewed or issued every year.

Driver’s License Requirements for Online Renewal:

Driver license in Ontario is valid for 5 years. You have to renew drivers license every 5 years. You need a new drivers license photo every 10 years. Photos are taken instantly at Ministry of Transportation. Basically, you don’t have to do anything but dress well and smile. Renewals can be done online on Ministry of Transportation website or in person at Ministry of transportation locations.

• Only a G-full driver’s license is eligible for online renewal in Ontario. G1 and G2 class drivers license must be renewed in person at Ministry of Transportation location.

Renewal fees may be lower if you are over 76 years old or will not renew driver’s license for a full 5 year period. Renewal fee for seniors as an example is $36. Seniors driver license should be renewed every 2 years instead of 5 years.

On renewal application completion, you should receive your driver’s license by mail. Usually, you should receive it within a month or so. In meantime, you will receive a temporary document until you obtain your permanent driver’s license. Temporary document is issued online, you can download and print it.

You can update address of an existing driver’s license online, on Ministry of Transportation website. Address change is free. However, any other changes (date of birth, name, height, etc) to driver license can’t be accomplished online. You gave to go in person at Ministry of Transportation location.

Commercial Driver License Renewals Ontario

Commercial drivers have their driver license related to their work and should renew it before expiration date to avoid problems. When your Class A, B, C, D, E, F license expires, then your G Class license will expire too.

If expiration period has been longer then three years you will need to start reapplying for G class license from the beginning. Including G class road test. After a successful passing all G class requirements you can start reapplying for commercial class license.

Lost or Stolen Drivers License:

If you lost your driver license (or stolen), go to a Ministry of Transportation location and obtain a new one. In this case, you must present another document or ID which contains your full name, date of birth and signature. Passport will do fine too. Accordingly, MTO will issue a temporary driver license until you receive new one by mail.
