Ontario vehicle registration (Ownership) is divided in two parts:
Looking at the back of ownership document (image above): Portion on the left of vehicle registration document is ownership registration of your plates. Portion on the right is ownership registration of your car.
When you sell a car in Ontario you keep ownership plate portion of vehicle registration paper (Ownership). Plates are your property and might be needed latter on. Image below shows plate portion of vehicle ownership document.

While you might sell your car and transfer ownership of vehicle to someone else, plates will remain registered under your name. You are under no obligation to return your car plates and can keep them for your own records. If you buy another car, you can reuse your old plates.
